Le problème des piscines / The swimming pools problem

Une petite pause dans la narration de nos tribulations italiennes pour vous parler d'un truc qui me chiffonne, en Finlande: l'influence de la "culture sauna" sur le fonctionnement des piscines. Ici, je vous l'ai dit, ce n'est pas une légende: on ne porte pas de maillot quand on va au sauna. Entre amis, en famille, avec les collègues, et sans la moindre gêne. J'ai un petit problème avec l'idée de me retrouver nue en compagnie, je dois dire, même si je serais la seule choquée... Alors bon, le temps que je m'habitue à l'idée, j'évite les saunas (pas toujours facile, d'ailleurs).

N'empêche, récemment, je me dis que je pourrais profiter des températures encore, disons, supportables, pour aller à la piscine faire un peu d'exercice. Sauf que... les maillots ne sont pas toujours obligatoires ici non plus. En fait, ils sont traditionnellement absents dans certaines piscines, et dans toutes, interdits dans les douches (obligatoires, elles). Dans une des piscines du centre-ville, qui fête ses 80 ans, les maillots ont été interdits jusqu'en... 2001. Arrrrrrrrgh...

A little break in telling our Italian adventures, I want to share with you something that bothers me a little bit, here in Finland: the influence of the "sauna culture" on the swimming pools. I told you already, it's not a legend: people here go naked to sauna. With friends, family, colleagues, and without worrying. I have a small problem with the idea of being naked around people, I must say, even though I know I would be the only one to be shocked... So until I get comfortable with this, I avoid saunas (which is not always easy, by the way).

Anyway, recently, I thought I might take profit of the still... mmm... let's say "bearable" temperatures, to have a little exercise and go to the swimming pool. The trouble is... swimming suits are not always compulsory there either. Actually, they are traditionnally absent in some pools, and in all of them, they are forbidden in the showers (which are compulsory). One of the city's swimming hall is celebrating its 80th anniversary and swimsuits were actually forbidden there until... 2001. Arrrrrrrrgh....
